Semester Exam - Altered Images Summary

Flag Over the Reichstag

The famous picture of a Soviet soldier holding a Soviet flag over the ruined Reichstag is a picture altered from what is originally was. The picture was inspired by the picture of US soldiers holding the American flag in Iwo Jima and was taken shortly after the fall of Berlin. The photo was changed from the original to create a symbol of the great Soviet triumph over Germany.

The Disappearing Commissar

Nikolai Yezhov was originally pictured here alongside Joseph Stalin. Following Stalins great purge of the 1930's Yezhov was convicted as an enemy of the state and a political 'unperson'. As such, Yezhov was removed from this picture so that he wasn't connected to Stalin in anyway that would harm Stalin's reputation.
